Oval Stakeholder ebulletin from TFL, 6 November 2015
As you are aware, we are improving the junctions around Oval station to create segregated cycle lanes, enhance public spaces and improve pedestrian crossings as part of the Road Modernisation Plan.
Main construction works started in March and are expected to finish in early 2016. I’m now writing with an update on recent progress and to give more information on upcoming work.
Progress update
- Opening of the new segregated cycle lane and Hold the left turn cycle lane, Wednesday 4 November – Brixton Road at the junction with Kennington Park Road.
- Cyclists are benefiting from having their own set of traffic signals that removes the conflicting movement between cyclists travelling straight ahead and motorists turning left. Our engineers monitor the signals to ensure the junction layout works as efficiently as possible, and will be making alterations to the signal timings if/when required.
- Pedestrian crossings have been improved on Harleyford Street, near Oval, with the staggered crossing replaced with a new straight across crossing that allows pedestrians to cross the road directly.
Ongoing improvements – Kennington Park Road
We’ve been working with our construction team to improve issues relating to drainage, the cycle track surfacing and the phasing of traffic lights along Kennington Park Road. Thank you for your continued patience as we work to complete the scheme by early 2016.
Plan your journey
As the construction work progresses, roads in and around Oval will be busier than usual and some road users and bus passengers will experience increased congestion.
Please plan ahead and allow more time to complete your journeys through the area. If you are driving, consider travelling outside of the busiest times wherever possible and visit tfl.gov.uk/trafficnews or follow @TflTrafficNews for the latest traffic information.

We are working hard to minimise disruption but apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience while the works progress. For more information about the scheme and travel advice, please visit tfl.gov.uk/ovaltriangle
Cycle Superhighway 5 (CS5) opening
Cycle Superhighway 5 (CS5) opened to cyclists in both directions from Oval to Pimlico on Thursday 29 October.
We would like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience during these works. We will now undertake a programme of monitoring and review to ensure the scheme is safe and functioning as intended. CS5 and Oval junction works are just two of the schemes making the capital’s streets safer and more convenient for cycling.

Resurfacing works between Oval and Stockwell
From mid-November TfL is resurfacing roads in Stockwell and Oval to ensure they are fit for the future. The work cannot be completed while the carriageway is in use and to keep disruption to a minimum, a series of short-term overnight road closures will be needed. Affected residents and businesses will shortly receive letters informing them about the works.
