Our Community Centre

Activities in our Community Centre are now provided by a combination of regular groups who use the Centre for sports, health and dance activities, to provide children’s tuition and performing arts classes, and to share their faith. Community and political groups are increasingly holding their meetings here. Several local theatre companies regularly enjoy the space we can offer for their rehearsals, extending invitations to local school students to observe their preparations and performances. Our Christmas Pantomime was enthusiastically received by local kids and parents – as was Santa’s visit (many thanks to Akosua and Shannon and their teams for staging this for us).       Details of some of our Spring activities are below.   Enquires about bookings can be made by email to kpccoval@gmail.com or via the website kpccoval.org. Kennington Park Estate Tenants’ & Residents’ Association has a Licence to Occupy the Centre until July 2018, and manages the…

Upgrading the CCTV monitoring system

In July we reported that the TRA had submitted formal complaints in respect of Hyde’s consultation on an upgraded CCTV monitoring system (see below). Hyde has now issued a statutory section 20 notice of intention. The TRA’s formal response to it can be found here.   Hyde has informed us that they are taking some time to consider our response. We very much welcome this constructive response and hope that this means that notice is being taken of our views and observations.   From July Newsletter: “Hyde wrote to residents in May asking for our views on whether an upgraded CCTV monitoring system should be provided in-house or outsourced. The TRA was most concerned about the content of this letter, which was based on inaccurate and misleading information about the history of the installation of CCTV locally, because it did not provide any data on the effectiveness of CCTV as…

We don’t live in tower blocks, so should we be concerned about fire safety? How good are Hyde’s Fire Risk Assessments?     Grenfell residents were ignored when they raised concerns. Isn’t it time social housing residents were listened to?     Kennington Park Community Centre – KPCC Oval  Our Community Centre is now OUR community centre. As a result of our campaign to stop it being closed and demolished, from this month the TRA is jointly managing it alongside Hyde. Rents and service charges from 1 April 2017

Hyde is currently sending out notifications of our rents and service charges for the coming financial year. The Government has instructed Housing Associations like Hyde to reduce rents by 1% (roughly £1 per week) but there is no such restriction on service charges. The charges we have to pay from 1 April are estimates and we advise everyone to look at the figures very closely. Check them against last year’s bill if you still have it. Hyde should have sent out statements of how much was actually spent on services during 2015-16 before Christmas; these figures are meant to form the basis of the estimates for the coming year. These statements are now several months overdue. The Tenants Association has made it clear that we find this unacceptable, particularly since we submitted comments on the invoices for the Estate at the beginning of November. The contract to monitor the CCTV…
