Fireworks – and Hallowe’en events

Kennington Park Estate residents are very concerned at the dangerous misuse of fireworks by a handful of youngsters on the Estate and are asking everyone to spread the word about the Firework Code – and to make sure everyone sticks to it!  We are also asking local shops to stop selling fireworks to under 18s. It is illegal to sell adult fireworks or sparklers to anyone under 18; and for anyone under 18 to possess adult fireworks in a public place.      There is a free fireworks festival and bonfire just up the road in the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens on Hallowe’en, 31 October, at 6.30 pm. More information and a map can be found by clicking here  (http://vauxhallone.co.uk/events/fire-festival-vauxhall-pleasure-gardens).   This year we are telling the “Legend of the Trickster God Loki and the Dark Elves.” The story of how Thor got his hammer. Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens becomes Asgaard, the home of the Viking…

Kennington Park Flower Garden

The Flower Garden in Kennington Park has been restored with the support of £500,000 funding, primarily from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Lambeth Council. It was formally reopened on 18 July, when a new sundial was unveiled by the MPs for Vauxhall and Bermondsey & Old Southwark, Kate Hoey and Neil Coyle.         The new sundial was made from Welsh slate by Sam Flintham, a student of historic stone carving at Kennington’s City and Guilds of London Art School.     The programme of events which will now be taking place in the Flower Garden is reproduced below – starting with Bat Walks on 22 August and 17 September (bat detecting at twilight!) and a guided walk through the garden on 5 September and 3 October.

Local Council Services to be Cut

Lambeth Council Cultural Services are being CUT! Government austerity measures mean that Lambeth Council’s funding has been halved, which means a devastating £90 million service cuts over the next three years. Some of those cuts will come from the budget for our local libraries, parks, sports centres and the arts, and many much valued and used local facilities could be for the chop.   Consultation is taking place with a closing date of 24 April.   The questionnaire is available online at www.lambeth.gov.uk/culture2020consultation and in the Library.   For residents of Kennington Park Estate the proposals particularly mean the loss of all council funding for our nearest library, Durning, and changes to the way Kennington Park is funded and operates.    Durning Library   The Council is proposing to turn Durning into a ‘Community Library’. There is a Campaign against this already underway:       As well as stopping…
